Cable Street development plans unveiled

Woodford Land Cable Street PlansWoodford Land has submitted for approval mixed use proposals for the regeneration of the 10.4 acre site of the former Monmore Ironworks in the All Saints area of Wolverhampton.

The Cable Street site is located 1.5km south east of the city centre and has sustainable transport links by road, rail, tram, national cycle network and canal.

The site is part of a key regeneration area which Wolverhampton City Council and All Saints and Blakenhall Community Development (ABCD) are seeking to transform.

The Local Authority has approved a development brief which has formed the basis for the Woodford scheme and the masterplan for the wider area.

The 4.3 hectare site will be redeveloped to house 157 residential units and six B1 commercial and light industrial units.

The development will have two access points onto Cable Street in order to separate traffic from the two elements of the scheme.

The proposals include six commercial units varying in size from 580m2 to 820m2, with potential to create in excess of 50 jobs.

The new units will provide a buffer between the residential area and the existing Central Trading Estate.

The residential scheme will comprise 113 three and four bedroom homes and 44 one and two bedroom apartments.

The focal point for the new development will be the Wolverhampton level of the Birmingham Canal which runs adjacent to the site.

The residential areas have been designed to capitalise on the exiting landscape and create new features such as:

  • A new boulevard connecting the canal with a local landmark; the nearby All Saints Church

  • Improvements to the canal frontage including landscaping and a new canal side footpath

  • A centrally located area of Public Open Space

  • A continuous pedestrian and visual linkage between All Saints Church and the canal basin

The property has been cleared to make the site safe and following the approval of the scheme, remediation and engineering works will commence in summer 2008.
